Character is an
identity of human which shown that is good or bad. In another word said that
character is a mental or moral which marked a person and distinguish one person
to others. In 2013 curriculum there is a balance between the
skills, knowledge, and soft skills or character of students, so that the
curriculum is not only promote hard skills, but also soft skills are equally
important, because soft skill which will bring the character of a student being
a good student and an example or not. With sophisticated advance technology
right now, we have to use and utilize it to teach soft skill or good character
to our students, so they can more easily to understand and imitate the action.
Movie is the resolve of the problem. From many media, movie is the media that
very popular and interesting strategy to do this.
The writer use the
theories of Linda and Richard also Webster to analyze character building
values, intrinsic literature and relation of them in the Big Hero 6 movie. The
purposes of doing this research are to find out (i) the intrinsic literature
seen in Big Hero 6 movie, (ii) the types of character building values seen in
Big Hero 6 movie, and (iii) the relation between character building values and
education.
The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The
writer chose Big Hero 6 movie because the writer noticed that the utterances
produced by the characters contain a lot of Character building values. The data
of this research are character building values and the intrinsic literature in
the conversation among the characters of Big Hero 6 movie. The data source in
this research is an animation movie entitled Big Hero 6 movie.
The result shows that there are sixteen character building values that
contain on this movie. They are; honesty, bravery, peace ability, self-
reliance, self- discipline, loyalty, respecting others, love and affection,
enthusiasm, sacrificing each other, sincerity, strong belief, sorry and
apologize, optimism, responsibility, and perseverance. Then, there are five of
intrinsic literature included; theme (friendship), character and
characterization (there are two main characters and eight minor characters),
plot (about friendship which defeat the crime), setting (place and time), point
of view (first person point of view).
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the
researcher presents the background of the research, statement of the problems, purposes of the study, significant
of the research, limitation of the research, and operational definition. All of
the items will be explained on this chapter.
1.1 Background of Research
Character is an identity
of human which shown that is good or bad. In another word said that character
is a mental or moral which marked a person and distinguish one person to
others. We are doing something for communicate with another person or share
something to the society around us also doing interaction with something around
us. Character are the total quality of a person’s behavior, as revealed in his
habits of thought and expression, his attitudes and interest, his action, and

Character buildingvalues are good actions are those that issue from good character traits, or
because good traits are those that generally incline us toward actions that are
good for some independent reason such as the intentions with which they are
performed or the consequences of performing them. Teacher back then were
expected to teach and make discipline for their students to be respectful of
authority and responsible in completing their lessons. While maybe not as
visibly emphasized today, these expectations remain essentially unchanged.
Because of teacher’s influential role in the lives of young people, the public
still expects teacher to display behavior reflective of moral virtues, such us
fairness and honesty, and to adhere to professional codes of conduct (Sugiyono,
2008: 45).
As we know that in 2013 curriculum there is a balance
between the skills, knowledge, and soft skills or character of students, so
that the curriculum is not only promote hard skills, but also soft skills are
equally important, because soft skill which will bring the character of a
student being a good student and an example or not. So that’s way, this
curriculum often called character based curriculum. Curriculum 2013 is prepared
to produce generation who ready in facing the future. Therefore, the curriculum
is constructed to anticipate future developments, because nowdays, our nation
is facing the globalization era that very crucial for our young learners until
the teenagers. The morality is the big problem faced by all of stages students,
the effect of western culture has been changed their attitude, Loyalty,
sincerity, modesty, and filial piety only a cadences in the past. To face about
this big problem the government getting out the new curriculum called
curriculum 2013.
Today, most people live by imitating the life-style of
their popular idea, covered fashion, style, even behavior. This phenomenon
happens because they got inspirited people from audiovisual media such as
cinema, advertisement, song, video, movie, etc. Bandura and Walters (1963) in
Mariel Downey and A. V. Kelly (1978; 69) said that theories of social learning
and personality development largely on the notion of imitation or modeling.
Imitation plays an important role in the learning of deviant as well as
conforming behavior. The development of audiovisual technology and
information media influences the lifestyle changing of society. Radios,
television, DVD, VCD are some examples of electronic which become furniture at
household. Those media have function as information and entertainment media.
The use of media technology can entertain people 24 hours up to their needs. it
influences people’s live in procreative and consumptive society, because all
programs are presented in entertaining ways, in examples; cinema, advertisement,
movie, interactive talk show, even criminal phenomenon and news.
From all of media, movie is the most interesting subject
for the people nowdays, because it very simple and have a big impact for all watcher.
It has one message that delivered, and audience must find it. It can be said
that movie gives message to audience to get ideas of moviemaker. In addition, the movie has educational
messages. Educational messages in the movie have same function as the sender
message similar to literary work, such as the novel. But its difference; the
movie has more complexity, because the audience has to interpret not only
literary words in the dialogue, but also is expected to interpret the movements
or events in everyscene in the movie. However, the movie has its own
uniqueness, because it combines the words in the dialogue, in motion pictures,
and audio that makes the audiences enjoy the movie.
From the above explanation, the audience is invited to
be attached to the story of the movie; because, the one who makes the movie
meaningful is the audiences. In addition, the audiences also spontaneously
learn something from the messages contained in the movie. It is also aimed at
those students who require learning a new atmosphere which bored with normal
learning in the classroom which doesn’t entertain. It’s not only entertaining
but also having a moral teaching. Hays stated his organization commitment to
the goals of:
“Establishing and maintaining the highest possible
moral and artisticstandard in motion picture production, and developing
educational aswell as the entertainment value and the general usefulness of
themotion picture.” (Joel spring,
2001: 346)
Movie is good if it has lots of educative messages.
The purpose of the educative message is an example of good behavior which
reflects a religious message, education and morality which completed in
character building values. Examples of good behavior are honesty, forgiveness,
helping each other and so forth. The essence of good message is giving the good
effect on the audience. The teaching of educative message will change mental/
thought on audience, or just giving an insight and movie is a teaching with put
the message in conflict. Conflict in the movie will motivate the audience in
accordance with the movie. On the basis of the description above, the authors
make a movie entitled Big Hero 6. This
movie is an animation film which produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures at November, 7th 2014. It is becomes the highest-grossing animated film of
2014. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Kids' Choice
Award for Favorite Animated Movie. It also received nominations for the Annie
Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated
Feature Film, and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film. This film directed by
Don Hall. That film tells the story of a young robotics
prodigy named Hiro Hamada who forms a superhero team to combat a masked
villain.The movie is
about how to love and affection each other, and also how to build relationship between
each other. So that readers can take moral messages that contained.
