THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Background of The Research
Das Sollen : According to the National curriculum of 2013
the students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus should be able to understand and express
their speaking skills in real communication at least in the classroom.
Das Sein : In fact, there still many student that cannot
applied their speaking ability in real communication.

Statement of The Problem
Is there any
significant correlation between the speaking ability of the students and the
mastery of grammar in the eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in the
academic year 2013/2014?
1.3
Purpose of The Research
To
find out the correlation between the speaking ability of students and the mastery
of grammar in the eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in the academic
year 2013/2014.
1.4 Significance of The
Research

Practical benefit

It will give contribution to
English teacher and can be a reference to improve their ability in teaching
English.

Gives information about the
relation between speaking ability of student and the mastery of grammar of
student, so the teacher can know the where is the key of speaking ability of
students.

It can be becomes the reference
to the the next research.
1.5 Limitation Of The Research
To
analyzed the correlation between the speaking ability of students and the
mastery of grammar in the eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus. The
writer focuses only in speaking skill of student. And the subject absolutely in
eleventh grade of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus.
1.6 Operational Definition
1.
Speaking ability is an ability
which communicating the speech sound for conveying the message, to report
act/situation, a sequence of ideas fluently for the daily activities in the
novice level.
2.
Grammar is the set of
structural rules that govern the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in
any given natural language.
3.
Eleventh grade students of SMA
1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 are the students who are studying in
SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 actively.

Speaking has a relationship with grammar
because grammar is one of component in speaking. Sometimes if we speak without
the good grammar it will had the wrong meaning. But it not guarantee if the
students have a good grammar would be had a good speaking.
2.6
Review of Previous
Research
1.
The correlational between the speaking
skill and the mastery of past tense in tenth grade students of SMA 3 Jombang in
the Academic Year 2008/2009 by Sanusi Pane. The result showed that the speaking
ability of the students who have a good knowledge in simple past tense was good
because the highest score = 80, lowest score = 64, and mean = 72.25.
2.
The correlation between
speaking and writing ability of the fifth semester students of English
education department of Muria Kudus University in academic year 2010/2011 by
Silvia Hartanti. The method is descriptive qualitative research and the technic
are collecting, classifying and analyzing the correlation of them. The result
is correlation between speaking and writing skills is lie on the low correlation.
3. Another study of Milden and sawhey
(1999) declares that the used of speech and auditory interaction on wearable
computers can provide and awarness of listening and speaking ability. The main
point is this study in level of satisfying to improve the listening and
speaking ability.
3.6
Theoretical Frame Work
The
speaking ability of student who had a good grammar skill would be better than
the student who had a low in mastery of grammar.
3.7
Hypothesis
There is a significant correlation
between the speaking ability of the students and the mastery of grammar in the
eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in the academic years 2013/2014.
CHAPTER III
METHOD OF THE RESEARCH
3.1
Design of the Research
In this research, the writer uses a design which is
called correlation research.
This research design describes the
correlation between the speaking ability of the students and the mastery of
grammar in eleventh grade student of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic years
2013/2014.
This research has two variables;
they are one independent variable and one dependent variable.
a.
Variable 1: the speaking ability of student in eleventh grade student
of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic years 2013/2014.
b.
Variable
2: the mastery of grammar in eleventh grade student of
SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic years 2013/2014.
3.2 Population and Sample
a.
Population
The totals of population of students are 120 students. They divided
in to four classes. They are: XI A, XI B, XI C,XI D. Every class consists of 30 students.
b.
Sample
In selecting the
students as the sample, the writer used cluster random sampling technique. The
class chooses is XIA.
The steps to take cluster random sampling are:
1. The
writer prepares 3 pieces of paper and each paper written by each class.
2. The
writer rolls it.
3. The
writer shakes the rolling paper.
4. The
writer chooses one from the three rolling papers.
5. The
writer opens the paper.
6. From
the cluster random sampling, the writer find one class that is XI A.
3.3
Instrument of the Research
The instrument of the research that used by the
writer is oral test and documentation to collect the data.
a.
Oral test
The writer used oral test to know the
speaking ability of students. The writer doing interview with the student and
the theme is daily conversation.
b.
Documentation
The documentation in
this research is the list of daily test value in grammar of the eleventh grade
students of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014. It to knows the
mastery of grammar of students.
3.4 Data Collection
To
collect the data for this research, the writer conducts several steps as
follows:
1.
Asking permission to the Dean
of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University.
2.
Asking permission to the
Headmaster of SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus.
3.
Asking permission to English
teacher in SMA 1 Jekulo Kudus.
4.
Determining the class as the
sample in the research.
5.
Preparing the instrument of the
research.
6.
Asking the data of the students’
grammar ability on the list of daily test value to the English teacher.
3.5 Data Analysis
In order to describes the
speaking ability and the mastery of grammar. The writer used formula Mean,
standard deviation and correlation product moment correlation to calculate
index correlation speaking and grammar.
