Endah Tri Mardiko. 113 06 013. THE MORAL VALUES OF “THE DARKNESS OF GATOTKACA” NOVEL
This study scrutinizes the moral values in Pitoyo Amrih‟s novel entitled The
Darkness of Gatotkaca. The objectives of study are to find the structure elements in The Darkness of Gatotkaca novel, to find the moral values in the
novel, to find the style of presenting the moral
values in the novel,
and to
find the implementation
of moral education of the novel. The
method that is used in this study is descriptive
qualitative method, which focused
on
the
textual
data analysis. The result is finding the structure elements that divided into
five parts; those are character and characterization, plot, setting, theme, and point of
view. Moral values that found in the novel are responsibility, loyalty, honesty, courage, consistent, and respect to each other. The implementation of moral education of
the novel is that we can take moral values of the novel as education for us and
takes them as guidance in our life.

Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often
with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect.
It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature,
film, photography, sculpture,
and paintings.

Literature (from Latin litterae (plural); letter)
is the art of written works, and is not bound to published
sources (although, under circumstances they can be exempt). Literally translated, the word literature means "acquaintance with letters" (as in the "arts and letters"). The two most basic written literary categories include fiction and nonfiction. Literature is
the collection of written works of language, time or culture. It
can
tell the stories of a people‟s values or interests. Many people consider
literature
to be
one of best ways to learn about other culture. Literature is usually the best books a
country or culture has made.

Since long time ago, literature has become element of human life.
It
has given much entertainment and biggest
inspiration. Literature is a
kind of information we need. Although
it does not provide answer, at least
it encourages our way of thinking. Literature works can be found in novel, short
story, poem, drama, etc. Literature comes from our inborn
urge to tell a story, arranging the
words into pleasing passage
or pattern and also human experience.
People have different interest or reasons for reading, for example
for getting information,
for pleasure or hobby, for enjoyment,
for satisfying, and sometimes for doing
assignment from teachers. Based on
the reasons, actually
human
wants to get the advantages of information
given in a text. In getting education information, we
can
also get it in
literature texts, such as novel.
Literature
has double functions: to entertain and also useful for
the reader. It entertains by
delivering of beauty, giving meaning for life, or giving releasing to the imagination
of word. Besides giving pleasure, it is also giving many
new
things appearing in our life. Literature also gives us
important things in our life. For many
people, literary
work
becomes a media of delivering messages about rightness, what is right and what is
wrong (Daradjat, 1997: 19). Reading is the need for simulation, by the
environment, by other people or by ideas, thoughts and feeling and this is
called literature. So literature expresses and communicates thoughts,
feelings and attitudes toward life. Webster’s Third New
International Dictionary calls that literature as writing in prose or verse especially, writing having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of
permanent or universal interest (literature stands related to man as science stand to nature) (Webster, 1981: 1321).
Some literary works become so popular that they are well known
all
over the world caused their critical thinking about society phenomenon.
Novels can be one of the various texts of literary works and they
(the writer‟s novel) have certain message because they come from reality of society so they are created based on the culture of society too. There is a certain message, such as moral contain
in the message. In the
novel
contained a certain
message, such as moral. Because novel describes reality of the society, the writer sometimes writes it based on the problems that happen in the country. For
example, the problem is bad moral (moral degradation), thus the novel will give a teaching how properly moral is had. Thus, we can say that reading novels also learning about life in a surprising way without
taking any risk, we take apart in the action of the story.
In this global
era, we need to improve our moral. Thus, we must pay
attention to the moral education in order not to be affected bad influences. Moral education is not always presented by discussion in the class lesson formal context
but we can also use
other
ways to teach it, for
example literature
book like novels to deliver its messages. Usually students
will be bored if they only study
it in
class by formal condition because some of them will be sleepy
and
go to sleep. A good and creative
teacher should be responsible to solve
this problem. Teacher can give
other formal text such as novels to avoid or at least to minimize the
boredom. It can give more enjoyment, fun, and pleasure
in teaching moral education. So that,
they will be attracted and apply the message found in the novels in their life.
As have been explained that moral education is not only
learned in class but also through
read novel, thus the writer (of novel) must use simple word so reader it will be easy for to comprehend what the contents
of the novel. Novel, as we know, usually gives written that make the
reader interested in reading it. If the reader feels enjoy with the novel, it will
be easy for them to accept what the novel‟s messages. I this study, the
writer would like to please the reader by the messages that can be found in
novels suggested for moral education. The writer take novel entitled The
Darkness of Gatotkaca to analyze what
the
moral values in the novel.

of the Problem
In this research, the writer intends to focus on the following problems:
a. What are the structure elements
of The Darkness
of Gatotkaca novel?
b. What are the moral
values
of the novel?
c. How
are the moral values
styles
presented by author in
this novel?
d. What is the implementation
of
moral values
of
the
novel
in
the
educational context?
