CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses the background of the research, statement of the problem, purpose of study, significance of the study, scope of the study, definition of term.
1.1 Background of the Research
The foreign language that used in the several countries is used to communicate or international related with everybody in the many country is English. English is a foreign language in Indonesia. English becomes one of the important languages in the world lately. So, it is necessary to study English by anyone especially those who deal with international community.  English language plays an important role in relation to economics, politics, culture and international social relationship development. Thus English is a foreign language is important to learn. English is a foreign language learned in Indonesia. With the aim that the Indonesian people can communicate well and be able to develop their English skills in their environment. Now every school has a class of English since elementary school, junior high school, the highest education level is university. All was done so that students can have good English skills.
Kahnijaun, (2006:2), states that vocabulary is important for communicating effectively. It is also vital for beginning readers to make sense of the words they see in print. Understanding a word will also help readers understand the whole text. Based on Richek (2005:414), “The influence of meaning vocabulary is one of the most enduring findings of educational research”. So, vocabulary is very influential in learning the English language, because more or less the vocabulary we have will affect us in English. Vocabulary will affect each other because in English there are four skills that must be mastered, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. That ability should all be based on the vocabulary skills that we have. The more vocabulary that we have the more good we use English to communicate. Thus, learning vocabulary is important for aspects of reading and comprehension.
According to the writer’s experience from observation in SMP 5 Kudus, the writer gets information about the low score of vocabulary students. From the score in English subject of eighth grade students in SMP 5 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 got from the English teacher, it indicated that class has the low score. More than 50% the eighth grade students of SMP 5 Kudus got low score. Meanwhile the KKM of English subject is 76. From the data, the writer concluded that the mean of English subject was under the minimum criteria. The eighth grade students of SMP 5 Kudus the students have difficulty in memorizing or remembering vocabulary that they have learned. It is because they did not really pay attention to their learning English vocabulary and they were not active in knowing the new words. Meanwhile, we know that their vocabulary knowledge will impact much on their English mastery.
Besides the students’ problems in the learning English vocabulary, the teachers also often get difficulties to find appropriate technique when they have to teach vocabulary to their students. The only way that the teachers usually use was “translation”. Teacher just simply defines the meaning of the words. So, whenever the students think about vocabulary, the students think about learning a list of new words with meanings in their native language without any real context practice. The most students suggested English is a difficult language to learn. Thus the writer uses the strategy “Word Map” in the teaching of English vocabulary. As cited in (http://www.readingquest.org/strat/wordmap.html), “A vocabulary word map is a visual organizer that helps students engage with and think about new terms or concepts in several ways. According to Schwartz & Raphael (1985:3) Word Maps provide a structure for organizing conceptual information over the course of defining a word. The new term goes in the middle of the map. Students fill in the rest of the map with synonyms, antonyms, part of speech and make a sentence or make a picture to help illustrate the new concept”.
In another sites (http://www.thefreelibrary.com), “The Word Map is a graphic device used to prompt students through the steps of the strategy”. Thus, students were able to learn generative and non-generative vocabulary strategies and could apply a generative strategy to analyze and create meaning for unknown words,
It is also supported by the previous research done by Ifana (2010) from Muria Kudus University entitled “The English Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Year Students of Mts. Miftahul Huda Batealit Jepara in Academic Year 2009/2010 Taught by Using Word Mapping Strategy”. The result shows that Word Map strategy can improve their vocabulary mastery of the students.
Based on the explanation above, the writer interested in teaching by using word maps strategy to improve the vocabulary mastery of the students. The writer wants to analyze the English vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students of SMP 5 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. Because of that the reason, the writer has the title of research “The Vocabulary Mastery of The Eighth Grade Students of SMP 5 Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014 Taught by Using Word Map”
