Speaking English is very important
for students because they can express themselves and being brave to state their
own opinions. Good ability in speaking can measure a success of language
learning. Speaking ability must be taught and applied in the class. In fact, in
daily life someone does more in speaking that writing. Many English teachers
who have spent much time in the class on reading and writing and almost forget
the speaking ability. In teaching speaking, the teacher must choose a technique
which is suitable on the student’s condition. When the teacher asks the
students to speak about something happened on them, most of them keep silent.
There are some problems happened in speaking teaching. First, the students are
less in vocabulary. Second, the students are afraid of making mistakes. The
third problem is the use of monotonous technique. One technique which can be
used in speaking teaching is sentence pattern drill because it can attract the
student’s interest in studying and improving the speaking students ability.
The objective of this research are
to find out the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Walisongo
Kayen Pati before and after taught using sentence pattern drill in th academic
year 2013/2014 and whether there is a significant difference between the
speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of MTs Walisongo Kayen Pati
before and after being taught by using sentence pattern drill in the academic
year 2013/2014.
In this research, the researcher
used experimental research as a design of the research. The data were collected
by recording the oral test of pre-test and post-test. Then, the researcher
identified and analyzed based on statistic calculation for getting good result
accurately, completely and systematically. The population of this research is
the eleventh grade students of MTs Walisongo Kayen Pati in the academic year
2013/2014 and takes one class (VIII G) as a sample that consits of 36 students.
The result of this research shows
that the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Walisongo Kayen
Pati before being taught by using sentence pattern drill in the academic year
2013/2013 is found the highest score is 68, and the lowest score is 52. And
from the calculation of the data, the mean is 59.83 and the
standard deviation is 4.83. So, the result is sufficient. Meanwhile, the oral
test of speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Walisongo Kayen Pati after being taught by using
sentence pattern drill in the academic year 32013/2012 is found the highest
score is 76, and the lowest score is 60. And from the calculation of the data,
the mean is 67,83 and the standard deviation is 4.67. It is categorized as
good. For analyzing the data, the researcher used t-test for dependent sample.
The result of t-observation (t0) is 5.936. Compared by
t-table (tt) on the degree of freedom 35 in level of significance 2.04,
it means that the result of t-observation (t0) is higher than
t-table (tt) and it shows there is significant different between the
speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Walisongo Kayen Pati
before and after being taught by using sentence pattern drill in the academic
year 2013/2014.
Based on the research result above,
the researcher concludes that Sentence Pattern Drill is appropriate in
improving the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Walisongo
Kayen Pati in the academic year 2013/2014. For the English teacher and the
other researcher, Sentence Pattern Drill can be applied as a alternative
technique in teaching and learning process.
