CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background of The Research
Ideal: The
students of eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Jekulo should be able to master about
vocabulary in order to understand English text and the scores must be fulfilled
based on under criteria minimum or KKM.
Factual :
The student of eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Jekulo Kudus still lack in vocabulary
it looks when the student still difficult to understand the meaning of English
text because they still master small number of vocabularies and the score achievement of student that still
under KKM or minimum criteria.

Statement of The Problem
1. How is the student interest
in mastering vocabulary of eleventh grade of SMA N. 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic
year 2013/ 2014?
2. How is the students’ response
of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Jekulo when taught by using Diary Song?
3. Can Diary Song Enhance the
Student Vocabulary Mastery of Eleventh Grade of SMA N 1 Jekulo Kudus in
academic year 2014/2015?”

Purpose of The Research
1.
To describe the
students’ interest in mastering vocabulary of eleventh grade of SMA N. 1
Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2013/ 2014.
2.
To describe the students’
response of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Jekulo in academic year 2014/2015 when taught by using Diary Song.
3.
To find out whether Diary Song can enhance the student vocabulary mastery of Eleventh Grade
of SMA N 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2014/2015.
1.4 Significance of The
Research

use diary song in improving of vocabulary.

contribute in English language teaching and learning as a guidance of applying Diary Song to enhance
students’ vocabulary mastery.

teaching English especially teaching vocabulary.
1.5 Limitation Of The Research
This research the
writer used diary song as a technique to teach English vocabulary. The scope of
this research focuses only in mastery of English vocabulary at eleventh grades
students exactly class XI.B of SMA N 1 Jekulo kudus in academic year 2014/2015.
1.6 Operational Definition
1.
Diary Song is a media to teach
English Vocabulary which ask to the student to listen to the song that pleasure
for them, the student must write down the lyric of the song in the students’
diary.
2.
Vocabulary mastery is student’s
mastery of all the words in English known. Here the writer only focuses on the
vocabulary material about song.
3.
The eleventh grade students of
class XI. B of
SMA N. 1 jekulo in academic year 2013/2014 are the students who are studying
English in the eleventh grade in SMA N 1 Jekulo in academic year 2013/20114
actively.
4.
SMA N 1 Jekulo Kudus is a high
school which takes place in JL. Jendral sudirman.no 18 Jekulo in Kudus regency.

1. INCREASING STUDENTS’
VOCABULARIES THROUGH SINGING THE SONGS IN GRADE IV STUDENTS 0F SDN 2
SEMARAPURA KLOD
- This research showed that by using song is very good way to improve
the students’ vocabulary because song
is a pleasure way to study. The result shows in the first cycle, the second and
third cycle. They are 55, 66, and then 78. It showed that the students Finaly,
the scores of students is very good in improvement.
2. “THE USE OF INTERNET - BASED SONG TO
IMPROVE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (A Classroom Action Research at the Sixth
Grade Students of SD Negeri Krandegan Bayan Purworejo in the Academic Year
2011/2012)”

The passing grade of vocabulary mastery in SD N Krandegan Bayan Purworejo
is 6.50. Besides the improvement of students vocabulary mastery can be seen
from the improvement of the mean score of pre-test, test in cycle 1, and post-
test, that is 5.50, 6.95, 7.76.
3. Sukron (2008) the
students of Muria Kudus University. He conducted a research entitled “THE
VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE 4TH YEAR STUDENTS OF SD N KOTAKAN 1 IN ACADEMIC YEAR
2008/20009 TAUGHT BY USING GESTURE”
- The result of his research shows that there is a
significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade
students before and after being taught by Using Gesture. The scores of student
improved significantly.
2.6 Theoretical Framework
The student of eleventh grade of SMA N. 1 Jekulo Kudus still lack in
vocabulary it looks when the student still difficult to understand the meaning
of English text because they still master small number of vocabularies and the score achievement of students still under
KKM or minimum criteria.
The Diary song is a media which
designed to enhance the mastery of vocabulary for students exactly in high
school level. This media is very appropriate because it can be to be a
motivation for the student because of song that used. After got a treatment or
action, the student expected will get an improvement in their vocabulary
mastery.
2.7 The Action Hypothesis
The diary song can enhance the vocabulary
mastery of eleventh grade students of SMA N. 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year
2013/2014.

III
METHOD
OF THE RESEARCH
3.1 Setting and Characteristic of The Subject of Research
This research will conduct in eleventh
grade of SMA
N. 1 Jekulo Kudus in
academic year 2013/2014. The subject of this research is the whole class of XI. B with the total 35 students
consists of 20 female and 15 male.
The class has a problem in English
exactly in understanding of English Text because their numbers of vocabulary is still in small number.
3.2
Variable of The Research
3.2.1
Teachers’ variable: Teachers’ activities in process of teaching
vocabulary by using Diary Song.
3.2.2
Students’ variable: students’ activities in process of teaching
vocabulary by using Diary Song.
3.2.3
The students’ interest in mastering vocabulary.
3.2.4
The students’ response when taught by using Diary Song.
3.2.5
The vocabulary mastery of students taught by using Diary Song.
3.3 Design of the Research
The research design of this
research is a classroom action research (CAR). This action research will do in
collaborative between teacher and the researcher. The teacher will teach and
the researcher will observe the teaching process. There are three cycles in
this research.
There are three kinds of
instrument that used, they are observation sheet for to know the process of
teaching, test which in order to know the development of vocabulary mastery
students, and then questionnaire papers to know the students’ response in
learning process.
3.4
Procedure of Research
There are three cycles that will
hold in this research. In every cycle consist of planning, action, observation,
and reflection.
3.4.1
Planning
In this part the researcher
prepare the lesson plan, song, material, observation sheet, and also
achievement test to see the progress and students’ development. Then, the
researcher also prepares a questionnaire paper to know the student response in
teaching and learning process.
3.4.2
Action
The researcher put the plan in to
action or put the diary song strategy in teaching vocabulary. The researcher
collaborates with the teacher to do this.
3.4.3
Observation
The researcher observes the
teaching and learning process that holds in the classroom by the teacher using
observation sheet that prepared before. There also test by using achievement
test to know the students ability.
3.4.4
Reflection
The researcher observes and finds
unexpected situation that has been done in the teaching and learning process.
It will to be a basic reference to make a planning revision in the next cycle.
3.5
Data Analysis
3.5.1
Observation Sheet
This is to know the students’ and
teachers’ activities during teaching and learning process run.
This is used table to make easy
the words written.
3.5.2
Achievement Test
This is to know and measure the
mastery of vocabulary students before and after action.
The test result would be analyzed by
using the formula of Mean.
3.5.3 Questionnaire Paper
This is to know the students’
response when taught by using Diary Song.
The technique that used is a
mixture both closed and open ended items.
