Deixis is very important to be
understood by English language learners. It cannot be separated between
deixis and language itself, because deixis is a part of language. One of language forms
in our environment are comics. It is usually used as media to teach English.
Those are why the writer conducts this research.
The objectives of this research
can be further detailed as the following; (1) To describe the kinds of English deixis that appears in “One Piece” comic and (2) To describe how English deixis are
used in “One Piece” comic.
The design of this research is descriptive
qualitative research. It describes deixis found in “One Piece” comic. This
research is also aimed to find out kind of deixis found in“One Piece” comic. This research uses the
descriptive qualitative research because it does not use research data such as number.
The result of this
research are; (1) The
kinds of English deixis found in “One Piece” comic are; person deixis that the sum is 426 or 50%.
Then, it is discourse deixis that the sum is 255 or 30%. Next, it is place
deixis that the sum is 83 or 10%. The fourth is Social deixis that the sum is
53 or 6%. And, the last is time deixis that the sum is 36 or 4%. So, it can be
concluded the the dominan deixis which is used in “One Piece” comic is person
deixis and the minor deixis is time deixis and (2) The
English deixis used in “One
Piece” comic are five; person, place, time, discourse and social. So, the
theory of deixis analysis from Jaszczolt in 2002 is sticked with the result of deixis found in “One Piace”
comic.
This research provides
several suggestions. They are; (1) For the students, They
are suggested to enrich their knowledge in pragmatics especially in deixis
analysis. They can analyze deixis in many kinds of texts in their environments
such as articles, novels, short stories or comics in order to develop their
understanding. (2) For the
lectures, They are suggested to use
interesting text to teach pragmatics especially deixis. They can use comics as
one of choice be their material in teaching. (3) For the further researchers, They
are suggested to develop this research in other field or specify this research
be more detail.
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In the first chapter the writer presents the introduction
including; Background of the research, Statement of the Problem, Objectives of
the research, Significance of the Research, Scope of the Research, and
Definition of the terms. This chapter will give the reader the outline of the
research.
1.1 Background of the Research
Deixis is very important to be understood by English language
learners. It cannot be separated between deixis and language itself, because
deixis is a part of language. If the learners study English language, they also
study its deixis. Moreover, the learners are unfamiliar with the term “deixis”. But, they are familiar with the term
“reference”. It can be understandable because “reference” is the term in
semantic; the term is usually used in learning English language, for example: he refers to a man and she refers to a woman. But, “deixis” is the term in
pragmatic; the term is unusually used in learning English language, Sutrisno (2010:13).
According to Yule (1996:9), Deixis is
one of elements of pragmatics. Deixis is a technical term (from Greek) for one
of the most basic things we do with utterances (pointing expression). It means
pointing via language. Linguistic form used to accomplish this “pointing” is
called deictic expression or also sometimes called indexicals. He also explains
that there five kinds of deixis, namely; (1)
person deixis, (2) place deixis, (3) time deixis, (4) discourse deixis and (5)
social deixis. Those are elaborated on the examples
below:

Adapted from Pragmatics by
George Yule (1996:15)
From the explanation above, it can be seen that deixis
is an important thing which should be
undesrtood by us from the language. It means, if the language learners want to understand the
language, they should learn about deixis too.
On the other hand, there are two kinds of language; (1)
Spoken and (2) Written, according to Cook (2001:115). Spoken refers to the
informal language. Some examples of spoken language are speech, script film,
conversation and comic. And written refers to formal language. Some examples of
written language are letter, news, report and journal. But, the writer only
focuses on comic.
In recent year, comic be a popular media in teaching
language especially English. Many teachers use comic to teach their students in
order to improve the students’ mastery in English. The writer provides some researches which used
comics in it, in the table below:

Hornby (1987:168) states that comic is a book or a magazine containing stories in the form of
drawing. Comic consists of dialogues (utterances) between each character inside
of the story. Situation of the story clearly defined by some dialogues
(utterances) expressed by the characters. Situation here means about who is
speaking in the story, when it happens, where it happens etc. When characters
on the story expressing the situation, sure that they are using deixis to
express the situation of the story.
According to www.comicbooktherapy.com, one of
comic which is very interesting around the readers is ‘one piece’. The readers
are very interest to read it because the story is very attractive and has many
moral values. It is the story about the reach of pirate to discover the earth
ocean. It also contains some values. There are strong friendship, reach, team
work, solidarity and hopes. So, the writer is attracted to analyze this comic
based the deixis theory.
From the explanation above, the writer conducts this
research entitled “Deixis found in ‘One
Piece’ comic”. He hopes that his research will be useful for the readers
and other researchers in the future.
