ABSTRACT
The aims of this research are to identify the
literary elements, discover the types of figurative language and describe the
function of figurative language used in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island movie.
The methodology of this study is qualitative descriptive study. In order to
collect the data the researcher observed the movie and then used note taking
technique to find out and classify the data into the types of figurative
language itself.
The results of this study showed that there are some
figurative languages used in the dialogue in this movie. From the analysis, it
can be concluded that there are 11 types of figurative language, such as
simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy, symbol, synecdoche, paradox,
hyperbole, oxymoron, litotes and irony. Moreover, the researcher found out the
literary elements and the function of figurative language. After analyzing the
data, the researcher concluded
that figurative language
is not only
to show the emotional communication, but also

INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Movie
is a form
of entertainment. It
is type of
visual communication which uses moving pictures and sounds to tell
stories and inform or help people to learn. Movie becomes an important part of
human life since it contains knowledge, education and entertainment. As
entertainment, movie is a good solution when people get a problem, it can be
the alternative resolution. Movie encourages people to see the different world.

Literature is
systematic study about
language and method
to analyze language itself such as in movie, poetry, novel, drama,
fiction or nonfiction. It’s used
to express the
feeling, emotion, thought
etc. According to Meyer (1997:1)
literature is a term used to describe written texts marked
by careful use of language,
including features such
as creative metaphors, well-turned
phrases, elegant syntax,
rhyme, alliteration, which are aesthetically read or intended by the
author to be aesthetically read and are deliberately somewhat open in
interpretation. One part of literature is figurative language.
Figurative Language
is one type
of literary work
which an emphasis on
connotation rather than
denotation meaning. Generally,
figurative language is language
that uses words or expressions with a different meaning. It is deeper than a
literal interpretation. Language used in
literary work has
specification based on
languages use in
other communication.
Figurative language uses figure of
speech to say something other than the literal meaning of the words. It is
interesting study because the writer is going to analyze language that used in
form of communication for instance
daily conversation, literary
book such as
novel, poetry, newspaper,
article, magazine etc and audiovisual like movie.
Since there are many figurative languages in this movie that commonly have the different sense than the literal
meaning, the writer is interested in analyzing and classifying the
communication that they used into the kinds of figurative language itself.
Based on this condition, the writer takes “The Analysis of Figurative Language
used in “journey 2: the Mysterious Island” Movie As Research.
B. Problems Statement
Based on the background of study, the
writer formulates the following problems:
