Lexical Meaning of English Register Used in electronic advertisement Issued by Kompas newspaper

ABSTRACT

The research is about lexical meaning of English register used in electronic advertisement issued by Kompas newspaper on  May 2012. This research discussed about the form of English register in electronic advertisement issued by Kompas newspaper on May 2012. Focusing on the problem statement, there are two cases. They are what kinds of English register used in electronic advertisement issued by kompas newspaper on May 2012 and what are the meanings of the English register used in electronic advertisement issued by Kompas newspaper on May 2012.

This research used descriptive qualitative method. In the conducting the study the writer uses documentation  method  for  collecting  data. Firstly  she  classifies  the English register contained in Electronic advertisement then she writes down the vocabulary. Technique of analyzing data in this study is by classifying them in the each form, explaining and finding out the original meaning of each vocabulary. This study shown that there are there forms of the register: there are word, phrase and abbreviation. Each of word in electronic advertisement has different meaning. The main reason people use registers is providing communication more effective and efficient.

INTRODUCTION

A.  Background of Study

Human   being   as   a   social   person   needs   a   certain   medium   to communicate each other that we call language. People always interact in different place, time, situation and condition. The people have to find the appropriate language suitable with whom, where and when they talk to. It will be easier for them  whether they use the same  language in  speaking  than different language. The society create many variations of language such as: slang, code mixing, dialect, register, idiolect and so on. Those language variation are used in communication context in daily interaction.

Register is a sociolinguistic term and concept that deals with the relationship between social identity and manner of speaking. specifically, it refers to the modification of speech to the statues of the speakers. One uses a different way of speaking (or different register) depending on whether one is talking to child, an animal, a spouse, a boss, a teacher, a salesperson, or a conference audience. (Leaver, 2005:172) Newspaper is one of information sources. People can see event around the world through newspaper. One of the functions is to provide information either local or global. The context of it can be grouped into three categories, among others are: influencing, entertaining and providing a market place for good or service. There are some newspaper in Indonesia such as: The Jakarta Post, Kompas, Republika, Suara Merdeka, Kedaulatan Rakyat and etc. The purpose of the newspaper is to gives information for society. KOMPAS is one of the national newspapers that can be found in Indonesia. There are many kind of information  categories  issued  in  the  newspaper  for  example  hot  news, business, technology, automotive, telecommunication, entertainment, advertisement and etc. Advertisement in newspaper can be dividing into classified advertisement and display one. Classified advertisement includes brief announcement, usually non-commercial messages such as electronic advertisement, house for rent, help wanted etc. displays advertisement usually contain commercial message and it is dominant one in newspaper.

KOMPAS  newspaper  is  the  one  of  well  known  mass  media  in Indonesia which covers some classified advertisement. In electronic advertisement there are some specific word using English, although it is an Indonesian newspaper. Therefore, it is only understood by people who work in electronic term. We probably find some difficult words, phrases, or abbreviation, for example, external speaker out, LCD, USB, HDMI input etc. the writer will attempt to analyze and gives the detail meaning of the difficult words, phrases or abbreviation which are found in electronic advertisement. B.  Problem of the Study

In order to specify the topic discussed in the following, the writer would like to formulate the problems as follow:

1. What kinds of English registers used in electronic advertisement issued by KOMPAS newspaper on  May 2012?

2. What  are  the  meanings  of  the  English  registers  used  in  electronic advertisement issued by KOMPAS newspaper on May 2012?
